Higher Education in Flanders

The majority of the lessons are grouped around projects. Complete lesson blocks with a minimum duration of two weeks culminate in a presentation.
All the lessons included in a block are keyed to a theme and supported by the fixed programme. The singing guidance as well as the theoretical (text analysis, language coaching) and physical lessons (acting and movement lessons) are based on the project topic.

In this way, one of the Operastudio's primary goals - reducing the distance between education and professional practice - is attained. The singers work in depth with the material and are guided in this by several teachers who, through their personal experience and specialization, are able to highlight certain features correctly.

The presentation is an essential element in the functioning of this project. The singers are afforded the opportunity of presenting their newly-acquired knowledge to a broader public.
This enhances their stage experience, enabling them to test their talent immediately on the real world. Additionally, they are exposed to the critical ear and gaze of an audience of connoisseurs and devotees of vocal music and opera.

The full-time course is based on the following cornerstones:

• The fixed programme: is aimed at the perfection and maintenance of the singer's basic components: the voice, body and intellect. The lessons include singing coaching and consultancy, language coaching, acting training, specific and conditioning movement training, dramaturgy. For the coaches the course runs partly parallel with that of the singing students, complemented by individual coaching training.
• Projects: The academic year covers some five projects in which the singers, under guidance, work on their repertoire. These projects culminate in a moment of revelation, where the result of their studies is presented to the public, comprising experts and laymen alike.
• Masterclasses: renowned and internationally celebrated teachers work with the students on certain topics and share their experience.
• These performances can assume different formats: from small-scale presentations to concerts and medium-size productions. The projects are presented on various platforms: in the classrooms, in specific locations and in concert halls, cultural centres and opera houses.
• Meetings: The Operastudio organizes meetings with specialized professionals from the world of opera (casting directors, agents, composers, dramaturges, writers, choreographers, etc.) who come to talk about specific and practically-oriented problems from their field of work and organize workshops.

Flanders Operastudio also offers practical work placements in the Flemish Opera and/or other opera houses. It goes without saying that such placements are dependent upon the opera house's choice of repertoire and the qualities shown by both the singers and coaches being considered.
