The programme aims, on the one hand, to educate students to become experts in the field of ICT & media law and, on the other hand, to refresh, update or intensify the knowledge of ICT & media professionals. The ICT & media sector is a rapidly evolving and highly complex sector, influenced by technological, economic and sociological developments. In this sector, existing legal frameworks are continuously challenged, traditional legal concepts and principles need to be reinterpreted and an insight into other - connected - disciplines is vital to function at a high level. The programme intends to address the increasing demand for qualified legal practitioners in the ICT & media sector.
To achieve this objective the programme will offer students a complete study of ICT & media law, focusing on international and European law as well as elements of national law. Students will also be confronted with important interdisciplinary perspectives (technology; economy; socio-political, cultural and media studies), and will be trained in a number of practical skills (both oral and written) that are of particular importance in the ICT & media sector. To ensure the highest quality of the programme, faculty will include both resident K.U.Leuven staff and national and international visiting faculty who are considered the leading experts in their field.
Students will develop an advanced knowledge of European ICT & media law. Issues covered range from IT law, privacy law, business law, criminal law, administrative law, competition law, to media and copyright law and telecommunications regulation. Students will also gain insight in how related disciplines can feed into a legal analysis. Finally, students will acquire a number of legal skills, in particular: carrying out legal research in an independent manner, drafting well-argued reports, formulating clear and concise legal opinions and presenting complex legal issues in a transparent manner.
