| Profile | Obstetrics/Midwifery The department of Health Care of the Artesis University College of Antwerp offers a transparent, powerful and qualitative learning environment that requires close involvement of all students and focuses on the individuality of each student. Proceeding from that vision the obstetrics/midwifery education offers its students an individually designed study path: each student is coached individually, with mutual reflection as the basic principle, but is responsible for his own learning process.
The obstetrics/midwifery education consciously aims at a balance between knowledge and competence based learning, which means that there is a constant alternation between theory and practice. Moreover, all teaching activities are given from a national, international and multicultural point of view. The main goal of the obstetrics/midwifery education is to develop each student into a competent and successful obstetrician/midwife.
The profession The specific training of the obstetrician/midwife makes him/her qualified to assist future parents during the normal birth process, to give advice, supervise and provide obstetric care during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. He/she is capable to independently be in charge of a normal childbirth and to take care of the new-born. The obstetrician/midwife is able to diagnose possible problems or risks regarding the mother or child in time and to seek medical advice or help. He/she also takes the necessary emergency measures in absence of a doctor. The obstetrician/midwife plays an important role in the information and education of health care, not only towards the mother, but also towards the family and society as a whole. In this essential family event not only medical factors are important, but also the psychical, socio-economic, emotional, physical and cultural aspects. The obstetrician/midwife devotes himself/herself to a complete integration of pregnancy and childbirth. Although clinical childbirth has become an established part of today’s practice, the obstetrician/midwife is responsible to see to it that the family has the freedom to choose the way they want to experience the pregnancy and birth of their child. Freedom of choice means that the future parents are sufficiently informed about the various possibilities of birth care. Due to her medical profession the obstetrician/midwife must be able, not only to lead the physiological childbirth, but also to possess the technical and obstetrical acquirements to function adequately in high-risk obstetrics. The most important task of an obstetrician/midwife can be summarised as follows: to inform, supervise, assist and provide obstetrical care.
· Independent practice, child & family, centres for sexual education and family planning, maternities, etc.; · Intramural: consultations for prenatal diagnosis and medical imaging, obstetrics, gynaecology, fertility, etc.; · Hospitalisation units: pre and postnatal, physiology, low and high-risk groups, gynaecology, fertility, etc.; · Polyclinic centres; · Delivery room: low and high-risk groups; · Neonatal care; · Education: teacher of theoretical and practical subjects, supervisor of practical training.
Study programme The bachelor in obstetrics/midwifery, with a recently renewed study programme, is based upon the new education profile of the Flemish Advisory Council for Education (May 2008) and fits in closely with the current professional profile of the Belgian Obstetrician/Midwife (December 2006).
The three year during programme is composed out of six semesters in each of which the same teaching activities are given. The level of contents evolves from introductory over in-depth to specialised. First the physiological obstetrics/midwifery is discussed, followed by the pathological obstetrics/midwifery and to conclude also the high risk obstetrics/midwifery.
The practical trainings comprise a major part of the study programme and already start in the first year. Their share and diversity increases as the education moves forward. That way the student grows more and more into an obstetrician/midwife's extensive field of action.
At the end of the education each student presents a dissertation, which is the result of different steps taken throughout the entire study programme. In the first two years the necessary preparations are made, followed by the composition of the dissertation in the third year.
