Learning how to apply engineering techniques in the manufacturing, processing and managing of living matter is central to the training of bioengineers.

The Bachelor training offers students a solid fundamental basic training with a due focus of attention on (bio)chemistry, (molecular) biology and the technology of the living world. In addition, Bachelor graduates are to have developed a series of quantitative and technical skills.

Bachelor bioengineers are  expected to have a solid basic understanding of mathematics, chemistry, physics, and general biology. In addition, bachelor graduates are to have a more in-depth understanding of molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology and immunology.

Finally, Bachelor level bioengineers will have been taught the basic skills of an engineer in terms of information technology, statistics, modelling, economics, applied chemistry, nutrition, environmental technology and engineering technology. These objectives are translated into the following set of concrete attainment targets:

Students are to acquire:
- a due understanding of fundamental sciences;
- insight into biological processes;
- insight into the functioning of living organisms;
- quantitative and technical insight into biological processes;
- conceptual insight into scientific/technological subject matter;
- elementary scientific communication skills;
- oral and written reporting skills.

Specific Attainment targets for bioengineers:
- are to have an in-depth understanding of the fundamental basic sciences of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics;
- are to have trained in molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology and immunology;
- are to have a due understanding of the results and techniques of biotechnology;
- are to have the basic skills of an engineer (information technology, statistics, modelling, economics, applied chemistry, nutrition, environmental technology, engineering technology).
