Higher Education in Flanders

1. To prepare students as researcher in biology with the option of study completion by way of an additional subject-oriented teacher training.
2. To train students into individuals capable of thinking for themselves by way of concepts particular to the fast developing science of biology with the following characteristics which typify the training programme, making it unique:
·Biological systems are complex, energy-dependent, display variation and are subject to evolution;
· All biological systems are characterised by multiplication, growth, development and information transfer;
·Biological processes are autogenous, interactive and dynamic.
3. To development a continuous interaction between theoretical knowledge and scientific skills, notably:
·Intellectual skills (due sense of analysis and synthesis; logical and critical mindset; non-dogmatic approach)
·Practical skills (punctilious experimentation; correct analysis and synthesis)
·Communication skills (scientific reporting, presentation and debating skills)
4. In-depth exploration of biology by way of a curriculum which is directly founded on research in the areas of the environment, ecology, molecular, cellular, development, genetic and human biology.
5. To teach students how to use modern information technology resources in collecting information, conducting experiments and reporting on the assignments carried out; to learn how to report orally and in writing on the experimental assignment or literature research performed and how to engage in scientifically argued debate.

1. To effect an in-depth ready knowledge and skills in biology through analysis and synthesis on the one hand, and establishing connections between various biological organisation levels: molecules, organelles, cells, organisms, populations, biocenoses, ecosystems and global systems on the other hand.
