| Learning outcomes | The 'Erasmus Mundus Master of Adapted Physical Activity' (EMMAPA) is a master programme, providing (1) a state-of-the-art on research and research methodology in adapted physical activity; and (2) social, agogic, and technical aspects of physical activities, adapted to special populations. Through these (A)dapted (P)hysical (A)ctivities, (a) therapeutic objectives in the treatment and the training of persons with both psychic or chronically somatic diseases and disabilities are aimed at, and, (b) through therapy, education, recreational activities and (elite) sports, optimal self-fulfilment is sought. The successful student should be familiar with (1) the main concepts, the acquired knowledge and the current research in APA-studies, including the completion of a research project; with (2) the nature of indications and / or limitations of physical activity for these persons, based on research findings; and with (3) the application and evaluation of adequate methodological, social and integration strategies in the implementation of adapted physical activity. Because the field of action is wide, and, in the curricula of most universities only limited attention is paid to this specific application of human movement, the objective of the programme is to combine the competencies of European universities as well as of universities from other continents, in order to offer students a comprehensive training in the many aspects of APA. In bringing together experts from all over Europe and as well from all over the world (Erasmus Mundus) at the K.U.Leuven, a review is given of the present APA situation in the European countries and in other involved countries from all over the world, with respect to this field of action.
