The Interior Architecture Faculty is part of the Department of Architecture and Arts of the Provinciale Hogeschool Limburg.
The discipline of interior architecture is wide: it ranges from the private ('living') to the public domain, such as restyling/designing interiors of stores, restaurants and exhibition spaces. Other temporary interiors like stands for fairs or similar commercially orientated project (retail) are becoming increasingly important. As interior architects design the artificial environment for men, they must take into account current trends in society. He/she is well equipped with creative thinking and is critical without loosing the ability to accept novel developments. An enhanced capacity in visual and spatial imagination enables the interior architect to combine creativity with technical understanding. A strong interest in cultural and social currents is a necessity. Students learn how to design in team as well as individually and to operate with a research driven method. Our education-programme is therefore based on three skills:
- aesthetic: to 'analyse' and appreciate space, to design space, to develop and visualise a programme;
- technical: to 'construct' a space, to judge materials and constructions, technical development of a design;
- organisational: to manage process and budget; understanding the legal frame.
The following competences are requested: to adopt an attitude of creative and conceptual thinking, an intellectual approach, multi- and interdisciplinary thinking, an attitude to research methodically, critical reflection, a good sense of communication, ethical thinking and being internationally orientated.
The usage of a laptop with wireless network already belongs to the culture of the faculty both for students and professors by applying digital drawing techniques and compiling an e-portfolio.
The course comprises an academic Master of one year. The student follows an individual programme on the basis of a selection of one out of the three subject areas: Furniture/object, Scenography/temporary design or Retail. A thesis and stage are also integrated in the master.
The institute is located in the building E of the University Campus of Diepenbeek, Belgium.
